Breast and Bottle Feeding

The choice of how to feed your baby is very personal. What matters most is that you, as a mother, feel comfortable and confident with the choice you make.

Breastfeeding

Research shows that, for the health of both mother and child, breastfeeding is the best form of nutrition. Breast milk contains the most important nutrients and antibodies your baby uses to grow and helps protect against infections. It also lowers the risk of developing allergies later in life. Breastfeeding promotes weight gain that suits your child, reducing the likelihood of being overweight later in life. Breast milk is easy to digest, and its composition naturally adapts to your baby’s changing needs.

That said, breastfeeding doesn’t always come easily. Especially in the first week, it takes time, patience, and practice. Establishing milk production and learning a good latch are important first steps. Fortunately, you don’t have to figure it out on your own — we and the maternity nurse are here to guide you. If needed, we can also refer you to a lactation consultant. Challenges in the beginning are common, but often temporary — and worth overcoming.

Bottle Feeding

Not every mother can or wants to breastfeed — for example, due to certain medications. Bottle feeding is a great alternative. We recommend having formula and bottles ready a few weeks before your due date. During your postpartum period, the maternity nurse will show you how to prepare the formula and explain how much your baby needs.
To avoid stomach cramps or taste differences, we advise sticking to the same brand of formula as much as possible.

If you already know you’ll be bottle feeding and you’re giving birth in the hospital, consider bringing your own bottles. That way, your baby can get used to them from the very start.

Questions or Doubts? We’re Here to Help

You can always reach out to us during your pregnancy with any questions about breastfeeding or bottle feeding. In some cases, it can be helpful to contact a lactation consultant even before birth. Especially if you’ve experienced difficulties before or have specific wishes or concerns. Many health insurers cover (part of) these consultations.
