The first days together

Congratulations — your baby has been born! After a special and often intense time of pregnancy and birth, the postpartum period begins — a time for rest, recovery, and adjusting to life as parents. During this period, we’ll be there for you with medical check-ups, support with feeding, emotional guidance, and answers to all your questions.

This period brings many changes.

It’s a time full of beautiful and intimate moments, but also one in which your body recovers, you learn to find a new rhythm, and you grow into your new role as a parent. We’re here to support you through it all, with care and attention for both mother, father and baby.

Our care during the postpartum period

In the first 8 to 10 days after birth, we’ll visit several times to check how you and your baby are doing. We work closely with the maternity nurse (kraamverzorgster) and coordinate all aspects of care together. While the maternity nurse is with you daily, we, as midwives, remain medically responsible. If anything unusual comes up, she will always consult with us.
You can arrange maternity care after your first ultrasound.

The maternity nurse usually stays between 3 to 6 hours per day. She helps with feeding and taking care of your baby, supports you in taking care of any older children, and provides lots of practical information. She’s also there to answer all your questions. You are generally entitled to eight days of maternity care. If extra care is needed, we can request an extension based on the National Indication Protocol (LIP).

Always available

During the postpartum period, we are available 24/7 for emergencies or any questions or concerns that can’t wait.

Always contact us in the following situations:

  • If the mother has a fever (above 38.0°C).
  • In case of heavy bleeding.
  • If the baby has a high temperature (above 37.5°C) or a low temperature (below 36.5°C).
  • If the baby hasn’t fed for several hours.
  • If the baby seems unusually drowsy or develops a noticeable yellow skin tone.
